Ir en un vehículo particular te garantiza la libertad de moverte cómo y cuándo quieras. También te posibilita admirar la diversidad paisajística de la isla, en todo su esplendor y a tu ritmo. Pero, sobre todo, te permite llegar a todos lados. Hay numerosas empresas que se encargan de ello y los precios son excelentes, tanto del alquiler del vehículo como de la gasolina. La Palma cuenta con una buena red de carreteras. Las principales son la LP-1, que recorre el arco norte de la isla, la LP-2, por el arco sur, y la LP-3, que como dicen los palmeros es "la que cruza la Cumbre" (es decir, la que une el este de la isla con el oeste). La LP-4 es la vía de acceso al Roque de Los Muchachos y la LP-5 conduce hasta el núcleo turístico de Los Cancajos. Además de las mencionadas, hay una buena red de carreteras secundarias e incluso terciarias. Entre las rutas más bonitas y menos conocidas de la isla, destacamos la LP-109 desde Barlovento hasta Roque el Faro, la LP-301 entre El Llanito y El Paso y la LP-212 por Tacande. Comentaremos, para finalizar, que isla tiene una superficie de apenas 700 kilómetros cuadrados pero las distancias pueden llevarte un poco más tiempo de lo que anticipas. Sobre todo por la propia orografía de La Palma y por el tipo de carreteras de las que dispone (recuerda que aquí la palabra "autopista" es desconocida).
